the merlot...

Merlot is a paraphrase of merle, which in French means little blackbird. This wonderful French variety is the result of crossing Cabernet Franc and the endangered variety, Magdeleine Noire des Charentes.
Its grapes are distinguished by their large, round, blue-blue raisins, with a thin skin and velvety tannins, but high sugar content. The small bunch production of the vines contributes significantly to the quality of the wines, as does the ageing, which adds character and finesse.
It gives wines of medium body and acidity with medium velvety tannins. With a deep ruby colour with purple highlights. Typical aromas for Merlot are plum and chocolate with barrel ageing acquiring notes of vanilla, sweet tobacco, mocha and overall coffee aromas.
